The 6th Annual Adirondack Shindig and Museum Preview Opening kicks off on Saturday August 10, 2019, hosted by the Town of Horicon and the Town of Horicon Historical Society.

More from the organizers:

“The 6th Annual Adirondack Shindig will feature the Preview Opening of the historic former Union Church built in 1881 and being restored for use as a historical museum facility.

The event takes place on Church Street in Horicon’s Hamlet of Adirondack from 11 am to 3 pm. This FREE event brings hundreds of people from far and near to enjoy live music and entertainment, and, this year, to see the results of their contributions and efforts by viewing the restored exterior and interior and ringing the still-operating bell of this 138 year old historic structure.

Food will be available at reasonable prices including at the adjacent, historic 160 year old Adirondack General Store where new owners Joe and Yvette say “We’re delighted to serve you.” Horicon Town Supervisor Matt Simpson said “Saturday August 10th is a special day in Adirondack on the east shore of Schroon Lake with events and activities from early morning until afternoon.”

The day begins with the Adirondack Yard Sale near the Recreation Field from 9 am until 3 pm and the exciting Adirondack Shindig – Museum Preview Opening - from 11 am to 3 pm. [Yard sale spaces are still available- contact Peggie: 518 494-4430 or Janet: 518 494-2191.]

Church Street closes at 11 am to get ready for the Shindig-Museum event. Shindig Coordinator Kathy Hill says “Musicians will play in front of this historic former Union Church built in 1881” and, added, ”Bring your own chairs, sit back and enjoy the music.” Town of Horicon Historical Society President Sylvia Smith noted the historic significance saying “On Saturday August 10th , walk through the original doors of this historic structure that for well over a century served Adirondack area residents and visitors and, now reborn, will serve again as a much-needed Historical Museum Annex to our long-existing Historical Museum in Brant Lake.”

Shindig benefits the Historical Society's project to save the 1881 church for Museum Annex use to be open to the public on this Town-owned property. Major reconstruction of the structure included a new foundation and exterior and interior construction to make the facility handicap accessible and Code compliant. Over $50,000 contributed by hundreds of individuals and businesses and a $100,000 New York State grant secured through the sustained efforts of our State Senator Elizabeth O’C Little and Warren County Economic Development Corporation President Edward Bartholomew and literally thousands of hours of volunteer time have saved this historic structure.

Additional donations and raffles at this year’s Shindig Preview Opening will go toward final cost of giving a new museum life to this historic building including the Society’s placement for public viewing many irreplaceable historical artifacts previously unseen due to lack of Museum space. A formal Grand Opening is planned for the coming spring with those historic artifacts in place.
