Rotten Apples At Schroon's Community Garden

Two recent acts of vandalism at the Schroon Lake Community Garden have left members saddened and angered.

Over the weekend 6 tomato cages were stolen from a front bed of one of the gardens and vandals cut a hose and turned on the water, which caused flooding to the basement of the Higher Grounds Coffee shop.

Schroon’s Spring Spruce Up

Under brilliant blue skies and glorious sunny days Spring Fever is gripping Schroon Lake. From landscaping at the Town Golf course, to repairs to the Town Floating docks, there are signs everywhere that Schroon is getting ready early for the season.

The changes at the Golf Course include getting rid of an eyesore patch of a wooded, weedy area behind the barn, Supervisor Mike Marnell told us.

Repairs are planned for the Town tennis courts and they will be ready well in advance of the summer.

Town crews are also making repairs to the town docks and replacing some floats.

“We might have a couple in by this weekend,” Marnell said.

Meanwhile, down at Schroon Lake Marina, Craig Kennedy and his crew have taken advantage of this spectacular week of weather to put in their own floating docks. This time last year rising water in our Spring Floods of 2011 made that task impossible.

In the days ahead a large concrete slab is expected to be lifted into place to extend their boat ramp, currentl;y out of commission.

Are you sprucing up for Spring? Taking the boat out this weekend? Tell us in comments.

Schroon Lake’s Musical Summer

Doo Wop, jazz, folk and country are among the music acts featured in this year’s 2012 Schroon Lake Arts Council line up for the summer.

“We are very excited about this season,” Jack Osborne, one of the organizers told Schroon Laker today.

The SLAC will again sponsor the traditional Monday Night Boat House Acoustic Jam Sessions, and the 23rd Annual Adirondack Folk Music Festival. There are also two free performances for children.

The number of acts is down “ever so slightly” from last year due to a ten per cent budget cut from the town of Schroon. Those cuts impacted several organizations that depend on government grants.

But that has not dampened the enthusiasm of the SLAC to find and bring unique acts to our community.

“We go out of our way to broaden the scope of music we have here,” Jack said.

This season’s lineup reflects that mission statement, while bringing back a couple of favorites.
