Memorial Day Weekend 2019 in Greater Schroon: Welcome Back

IMG_3667.jpg

Happy Sunday. Welcome back second home owners, day trippers and regular visitors to our slice of paradise in the Adirondacks. Our tip of the day: head on over to the Cubbies annual Pancake Breakfast at the Fish and Game Club, happening this morning.

The weekend got off to a bonza start Saturday with an arts and crafts fair in the town park, a bake sale and kids bouncy castle hosted by the Schroon Lake EMS and the first of the two-day Lions Club Garage Sale and Raffle Baskets, which wraps up today. at the Boathouse.

Dock Street Dogs had their grills fired up and businesses along Main Street were hopping, with packed parking lots at Witherbee’s and Sticks and Stones.

As usual, there was a line outside Pitkin’s, which is now under new ownership: welcome Adam McCall.  He has kept the name "Pitkin’s” and added some terrific menu items. Some of the new favorites are the "Narrows" (grilled chicken, BLT, cheddar, avocado & ranch dressing on sourdough). and the "Paradox Panini" (roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, sliced apples, bacon, cranberry mayo on grilled sourdough). We can’t wait to try the Shrimp Po' Boy (hand breaded shrimp, lettuce, tomato and remoulade on toasted hoagie).

And if you haven’t heard the bagel buzz – there are now authentic New York City bagels at North Woods Bread Co.

The Schroon Lake Association was flying the flag with Lake Stewarts stationed at our boat ramps and volunteers selling tickets for a Hornbeck canoe near the Boathouse. (The drawing is September 22, 2019).

Friends of the Schroon Lake Community Church spent the morning rescuing plants and flowers from the grounds of the recently demolished church, in advance of new construction. And book lovers got to eye a bumper crop of gently used books, CDs and DVDs at the Friends of Schroon Lake Library’s Book Sale in the basement of the Hudson Headwaters Health  Building.

And it was a full house at Paradox Brewery as the band Big Time Kitty entertained the appreciative crowd. The Strand is showing Dumbo this weekend, at 8pm.

Fishin’ For A Great Weekend

With the return of winter this week, the 20th Annual Schroon Lake Ice Fishing Derby looks set to have a terrific turnout this year, organizers say.

“With the snow today, that’s going to help us keep the ice temperatures cold,” Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club President Don Sage told us. “You don’t want it breaking up on a weekend like this.”

“Overall the conditions look good, but we are a bit concerned with the rain (in the forecast) on Saturday.”

The Tournament officially kicks off at daylight Saturday and goes through to 4 pm on Sunday.

So far about 110 advance tickets have been sold with many walk-ins expected Friday night and Saturday morning. The entry fee is $15.

“We had 230 entries last year and I think we are on track to do the same this year. Our records was 450 a few years back,” Don said.
