The Strand's Big Night Out

The Strand's Big Night Out

When folks travel from near and far to Schroon Lake – to help out a good cause – then you are pretty much guaranteed it is going to be a huge success. And that was the story on Saturday, December 28, when a near capacity crowd turned out for a fun evening of movies, memories and memorabilia for a fundraiser to Save the Strand Theatre.

In the lobby stood beaming Strand owners Larry and Liz McNamara, greeting dozens of folks. They were joined by event organizers, including Patti Mehm and Emily Rossi-Snook.

There was something about the energy of the event that simply made the art deco cinema glow. That art deco is untouched from when the Rossi family, who purchased the Strand in 1937, enlisted New York City theater designers to reimagine the interior.

We learned that nugget from Emily Rossi-Snook, who gave a brief history of how her family got involved in the Strand. (Emily is also the chairperson for the Save the Strand Committee).

Remembering Scaroon Manor

As the new Scaroon Manor day use site was re-launched today, it's time to reflect on what the old place looked like. Hard to image that Scaroon once featured 100 buildings, housed 800 guests, attracted top notch entertainers, had its own golf course, marina, tennis court complex, basketball court with lights, roller skating ring and handball courts. All of it thriving until the 1960s, when resorts like this fell out of favor. Did you ever go to The Manor back in the day? Share your memories in comments.

'Shake It' This Sunday At Scaroon Manor...

Tara Bradway, ADK Shakes Executive director, with some of the company at a performance Thursday.

This just in…The Adirondack Shakespeare Company has just got the green light to stage a show this Sunday at the old Scaroon Manor site, moving their Schroon Lake premiere forward by several weeks.

ADK Shakes, as the company is known, calls Schroon home for the summer. Executive director Tara Bradway got the news last night from the New York DEC. From Tara:

This brand new performance on Sunday is wonderful for us. The DEC contacted us to hang up posters at the Manor and at the camping grounds at Eagle Point. Campers have been asking about the shows that are going on. We suggested to them that we come on over to do a show this weekend! Sunday was our very last date available in our touring calendar, and people have been asking for a Complete Works performance in Schroon sooner than the end of July -- so we have delivered!
