Throw Back Thursday: Schroon’s The Narrows Restaurant

We are going back into the SchroonLaker.com archives for #TBT, prompted by a recent comment left about a story on The Narrows Restaurant we published in 2011.

That story was about the sale of all remaining items inside the restaurant, which was last opened for a brief time in 2006.

Established in 1971, the Narrows Restaurant on Route 9 served a couple of generations great pizza, cool ice cream and a good time. And, drum roll please: mini golf!

Behind the counter, folks remember the hospitality of Elza and Howard Urban and their family and workers was legendary. Reader Patrice Williamson recently shared her memories of The Narrows.

"Our family used to go to The Narrows every summer for some yummy pizza and of course a round of mini golf followed by a nice ice cream cone. My parents got to know Elza and Howard and my Mom always commented on her cute earrings she wore. Elza wore pizzas, pizza slices, pickles, records, hot dogs, burgers and ice cream Cones!! We loved to play table hockey with those wooden Nickels with numbers written on them with magic markers. We would flick them across the tables and whoever got the nickel to go off the table got a point. We also spun them, seeing who could make it spin the longest. Loved the view from the picture windows. Such a great place to take three generations of our family! We really miss that place. My Dad, age 95, still keeps in touch with them".

Thanks Patrice for your vivid and detailed recollections. Our 2011 story contains links that have sadly expired, including a Facebook page dedicated to the restaurant. The property where the restaurant building now sits, is used in the summer as a boat dock rental. The property, and many acres behind the building facing west, is are sale. Friedman Realty has the listing.

Reader Eileen shared this memory with us.

I remember ice skating from the town beach to the Narrows with my friends one winter and our friend Rosemary broke through the ice, but fortunately the layer she broke through was just a top layer and she only fell in to her ankles. I remember how scared we were at first and how relieved we were to see she was ok. We continued to the Narrows and enjoyed our pizza. That had to be about 1973 or 1974.

Got memories about the Narrows Restaurant? We'd love to hear them so share them in our comments section.
