Edward Noxon 1923 - 2014

SCHROON LAKE -- Edward M. Noxon, 90, passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.

Ed was born May 19, 1923, in the town of Schroon to the late Winfred and Nellie (Whipple) Noxon, and he was a lifelong resident of Schroon Lake.

Ed was a graduate of Schroon Lake Central School, Class of 1942.

After graduation, he and his brother, Bud, enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1942. Ed served until his honorable discharge in October 1945, with the rank of staff sergeant. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II, and he participated in the capture of Peleliu, among other operations.

Ed was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 982, VFW Post No. 362, the town of Schroon Lions Club and Schroon North Hudson Snowmobile Club. He was also a member of Schroon Lake Fire Department, Fish and Game Club, Schroon Lake Golf Course, the Community Church and Schroon Lake Senior Citizens Inc., which awarded him a lifetime membership in December. Ed was an excellent golfer and played regularly until his death. He is known for making five holes-in-one. He was a star baseball player (catcher) for SLCS and played basketball for four years for SLCS, along with some semi-pro basketball in Glens Falls under a fictitious name (since he was still in high school!!!).

After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Ed returned home to Schroon Lake and began a 30-year career with Schroon Lake Post Office. After retiring from the Post Office, he was a real estate agent with Friedman Realty and an assessor for the town of Schroon. Before joining the Marines, Ed worked for Milton Jenks delivering gas, and at the IGA store for Cyrus Mousaw.

He married Norma (Rutan) Noxon in 1946. Ed is predeceased by his wife, Norma; his sister Roberta; and his brother, Bud.

Ed is survived by his sister Lillian Richardson; his daughter, Kristine (Bill) Tribou; his son, Daniel ( Patricia) Noxon; his grandson, Edward (Stacie) Noxon; and his beloved great-grandson, Trevor; his grandson, Richard Noxon and his friend, Angela Huizenga; his nieces, Joan (Tom) Lawless and Lynda Noxon House; and his nephews, Patrick (Judy) McMullen, Richard (Carla) McMullen and Billy Noxon. He is also survived by eight great- nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, 1019 U.S. Route 9, Schroon Lake.

Interment will follow in Schroon Lake Community Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the funeral home.
