The life of the great Grace Hudowalski –- the first female 46er who made it her mission in life to answer thousands of letters from her camp in Schroon Lake from those who tried to achieve that goal -- is now celebrated in a movie, “The Mountains Will Wait For You.”

And there will be two screenings of the documentary this weekend, Friday and Sunday at Schroon Lake’s Strand Theatre. The film is narrated by the late Johnny Cash and is the first film from director Fred Schwoebel. The film was shot at Grace’s camp in Schroon in September of 1993,  and was only recently completed.

Grace, who passed away in 2004, is remembered as the long-time historian of the 46er organization, and for thousands of inspiring personal letters she wrote to climbers. She was a constant promoter of the Adirondacks as a destination, and for their preservation.

Schroon Laker recently chatted with Fred Schwoebel, and got the remarkable back story of how a twist of fate made him make the film.
