A Garden Regrows In Schroon

A former eye sore in the middle of town will once again be transformed into an oasis of vegetables and flowers, with the 2^nd Annual Schroon Lake Community Garden set for re-planting next month.

Three new raised beds have been added to the garden --  between the Higher Ground Coffee Shop and the Glens Falls Bank --  bringing  the number of adoptable plots to 22.

As of Monday afternoon, only 5 plots were left for adopting, organizer Sharon Piper told Schroon Laker.

“The Garden was a huge success last year. We had a waiting list of folks who missed out  who were able to adopt a bed this year,” Sharon said.

Besides beautifying the once drab, weed strewn vacant lot, the garden provided real benefits to individuals and the local Food Bank.

“Folks grew veggies for themselves and the Lions Club took out pounds of fresh produce for the Food Bank”.

Sharon, a co-owner of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast,  said the garden is also becoming a valuable educational tool for local kids.

“The Library is doing a program, a Gardening Club for kids”. The program will be led by the Library’s Sheila Yanko and Jane Bouchard.

Sharon said improvements will be made to the site. “I’ve spoken to a few people and they are talking about installing some benches. We have money this year to provide a heavy duty hose for watering and I’d like to put in a weed bin. We will also be taking out some trees on the south-side of the lot to provide more sunlight.”

To fill those beds plants, herbs and flowers will be on sale at the garden from the Green Thumb Nursery, of Fort Ann, on May 12.

“The plant sale won’t just be for those wanting to fill their beds in the community garden. It’s for anyone who wants to buy plants.
