29 Things Only Upstate New Yorkers Get

The folks at the MOVOTO Real Estate Blog have put together a list of what they consider 29 things only people from Upstate New York understand.

While not everything on the list applies to the Adirondacks and the North Country – there are many that do. Our favorite is #16 where there’s coffee all day, conversations in the mornings, ice cream after school, milkshakes and sundaes. No prizes for guessing that one! So read on, right here!

Memories of Schroon: A New Book! Save The Date, August 11

Everybody has a story about their times at Schroon Lake. We’ve met folks who hail from generation after generation, holidaymakers who have been coming here for decades and campers who spent their summers here during the 1950s and 1960s.

A rare few have put those stories down on the printed page. Now Susan Repko joins this elite club, with her new book, I Remember Schroon Lake.

The book is a compilation of childhood stories written by the author’s mother, Leona Huntley, who was brought up here in Schroon Lake.

From Susan:

“The stories document local history and family life for the Huntley family during the 1920s and 1930s.  They describe a childhood full of simple adventures during the Depression and how the family ‘made do’ during difficult times.

Leona’s father was an Adirondack guide and taught her how to shoot, hunt, and be safe in the woods.   Topics include hunting to provide food for the family, Leonia’s Pizza Restaurant, fun on the ice, and the Leland House”.

Sue says the experience of writing the book“deepened her relationship with her mother, although they lived thousands of miles apart”.

Sue will be discussing the book at a presentation sponsored by the Schroon Lake-North Hudson Historical Society, this coming Thursday, August 11, at 7 pm at the museum on 1144 US Rte. 9 in Schroon Lake.

The presentation is free of charge and there will be a book signing after the presentation.  All proceeds from the book will go to the Schroon Lake-North Hudson Historical Society.
